Lipstick is a wonderful thing. It's simple to put on and fun to wear. It comes in a variety of colors: red, pink, blue, purple. It makes me feel confident and powerful. According to studies, lipstick makes lots of women feel confident. When I wear lipstick, I feel like I can do anything, like people take me more seriously, like I'm respected. Lipstick is a wonderful thing, and this month, it is helping to change the world.
As not many people may know, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This is a month to call attention to sexual assault, which many people attempt to sweep under the rug. News flash: sexual assault is a problem, and it is not going away. So, to help bring even more attention to it, Red My Lips encourages their supporters to wear red lipstick throughout the month of April in order to start conversations and to show support for survivors of sexual assault. Now, I'm sure that this sounds silly. How can wearing red lipstick change anything, I'm sure lots of you are asking. Well, it can. I've managed to get a few people to wear it, who have in turn gotten people to wear it. I have started conversations because of it. I truly feel like I am making a difference in my small town America. But I'm not the only one participating in this. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world are doing this too. According to Red My Lips: "In April, 2015, over 500,000 Warriors from 99 different countries joined [them] in the fight against sexual violence and victim-blaming." You don't have to just wear red lipstick. Anything with bright red lip prints will do. What this campaign is all about is standing in solidarity with victims and starting conversations. Men and women are both sexually assaulted. Men and women both don't come forward for fear of being blamed as the instigator. Well, if you're reading this, you're not and I'm with you. All. The. Way. Don't believe that lipstick can change the world? Well, you're wrong. It has and it will. So join the fight, buy the brightest shade of lipstick you can find, and red your lips! |
