Let's face it: women had no rights in the early 1900s. As awful as that is, it's a fact. It's a part of history. WE CANNOT CHANGE IT. Yes, it's bad. Do I want it to go back to when women weren't allowed to vote or allowed birth control? No! Am I glad that women are becoming equal to men in society? Of course! But we can't change the past. Why am I saying all of this? Because people cannot seem to wrap their heads around the fact that Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was released in 1939, when women were still considered domesticated. Yes, Snow White cooked and cleaned. But a) her evil stepmother forced her to, and b) Snow White enjoyed doing those things! When she came across the dwarves' house, she thought to herself, Hey, maybe if I clean up for these people they'll let me stay with them. She wasn't cleaning because she felt that it was her place. She was cleaning in the hopes that it would convince the owner of the house to let her stay. Maybe if she knew how to paint, she would've painted a picture. Or their walls. But the only things she knew how to do were how to cook and how to clean. And not of her own volition! Her stepmother forced her to! Her cleaning the dwarves' house was completely for her own benefit. That was the incentive: maybe they'll let me stay if I tidy up their house. Yes, she had to have a prince save her. I'm sorry, but are you your own True Love? Can you kiss yourself while you're in a death-like sleep? Can you do anything when you're in a death-like sleep? She was poisoned people! You take a swig of arsenic and tell me how well you save yourself. Was she gullible to take a bite of a severely red apple given to her by a complete stranger? Yes. But let's back up. Let's back up allllll the way to her running through the forest after almost having her heart cut out by a man who was hired by her stepmother. He told her to run; she ran. Through a scary, freaking forest. That animation is messed up. I just watched the movie a few months ago and it scared me! So, obviously, she's freaking out a little. Snow's crying in the middle of this clearing, which frightens the animals. And what does she do? She apologizes. She comforts them. She was almost killed and she's comforting all of these little woodland creatures. To me, that's bravery. Bravery is being strong even when you're terrified. Oh, and back to the whole she needed a prince to save her thing: everyone needs someone to save them. You're not weak because you need saving. It means that you have people who care about you, and will be there for you. Snow White is brave. She is strong. So what if she's not strong in the conventional sense? So what if she likes to cook and clean? So what if she's feminine and girly? When did that become a bad thing? So, so what if you don't like Snow White. Stop hating. Or find a new reason to hate. Because she is a princess who was kind, caring, and made a mean apple pie. |
